Tampa Bay Lightning take the Stanley Cup Home
The 2020 NHL season
has finally come to an end and it’s the Tampa Bay Lightning who are celebrating
with the Stanley Cup trophy right now, after defeating the Dallas Stars, 2-0,
in game 6 of the finals. This is the team’s 2nd Stanley Cup win and
the first in years, which makes this accomplishment even more valuable in a
season that has been certainly atypical and full of surprises.
There is no doubt that
2020 will be remembered by many things, and one of them was the death and
resurrection of sports, during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the NHL,
as well as all the major American leagues have shown great commitment and a
great level of responsibility, and have managed to go on and crown a new
champion already, or soon, in the case of MLB and NBA, which showsgreat
signs of stability for sports and for the sports betting industry.
In the case of the
NHL, many doubted the league, teams and players would come to an agreement, and
the discussions were many and long, but luckily, things came up to good
terms, and we were able to finish the season, go into a bubble
format and keep players and staff safe before resuming activity.
Quick recap of the Stanley 2020 Cup Finals
Tampa Bay Lightning
ended up second in the Eastern Conference in the regular season, only behind
the Boston Bruins. The team’s overall record was
43-21, with a total of 6 wins in overtime, for a total of 92 points and a .657
win percentage. Dallas Stars, on the other hand, finished the regular season in
the fourth spot in the Western Conference with 37 wins and 24 loses, with 8
wins in overtime, for a total of 82 points and a .594 win percentage.
In the playoffs, Tampa
Bay beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round, 4-1, then the conference
leader Boston Bruins in the next round, 4-1 as well, the New York Islanders in
the conference finals, 4-2, and then the Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup
Finals, 4-2 again, to lift the trophy. Dallas had beaten the Calgary Flames in
the first round, 4-2, then the Colorado Avalanche in Round 2, going to 7 games,
and finally the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the conference finals, 4-1,
before facing the Lightning in the finals.
During the Finals, the
Stars were actually the team that took the first lead in the series, winning
game 1 with a 4-1 score back on September 19th. However, Tampa Bay
came right back and kept fighting, and won the next 3 games in a row, 3-2,
5-2 and 5-4, in overtime, to take a solid 3-1 lead. Dallas kept fighting and
won game 5 in double overtime, 3-2, but Tampa Bay got the job done in game 6,
tightened up in defense, leaving the Stars scoreless, and scored twice to take
the trophy home.
