San Diego
continues to chase San Francisco and Los Angeles in the NL West while the New
York Mets have a 3.5-game lead as they sit atop the NL East. The two teams will
play a three-game weekend series. MLB
betting is starting to heat up and so are we!
The Padres
Joe Musgrove gets another crack at the Mets after losing 4-0 to New York just
last week. New York’s Marcus Stroman will look to make it two straight over San
Diego. He and the Mets beat San Diego last week 6-2.

Pitching
The betting
value in Saturday’s game can be found in the pitching matchup. While Musgrove
has had his share of struggles recently, he is still among the MLB leaders in
ERA. In 11 starts, Musgrove’s ERA is 2.33, which ranks 13th overall among all
qualifiers. His WHIP is even better at 0.84, which moves him up to sixth
overall.
Now,
Musgrove is only 4-5 on the season. In four of his losses, the Padres produced
a single run to back him up. Musgrove has given up a total of 17 earned runs
this season. Nine of them came in consecutive 7-1 losses to the Giants. Three
more came in his last start, which happened to be against the Mets last week.
Musgrove’s
ERA in April was 1.24. In May, it was 2.84. The bottom line is that Musgrove is
a solid pitcher despite not going over five innings in his last three starts.

Offensive
Bottom Dwellers
He will go
up against a Mets offense that is one of the worst in the majors. It’s almost
surprising that the Mets are the only NL East team above .500. New York ranks
27th in runs per game averaging 3.87.
They have
been better recently. In their last three games, New York has actually averaged
over seven runs a game. They are a mediocre hitting team - .236 batting average
overall - but the Mets are hitting .291 in those last three games.
What really
is driving the Mets this season though is their pitching. The Padres lead the
majors with a collective 2.89 ERA from their pitching staff. Right behind them
in second is New York at 3.15.

Taijuan
Walker is 5-2 and ace Jacob deGrom is also 5-2 with a ridiculous 0.62 ERA. He’s
given up just four earned runs the entire season.
Stroman is
right there with them at 5-4 with a 2.41 ERA. In Stroman’s last start, he went
6.2 innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run in a 6-2 win over San
Diego. He also struck out seven.
With these
two pitchers going at it and New York’s lack of consistent offense, the play on
Saturday is the Under. In the four games these two teams have played thus far
this season, the run counts are 7, 2, 8, and 4. Saturday’s game will be in the
same range.
